English Department Standards for Teaching English for All Grades

English Teaching at Tichon Hadas is geared to achieve effective and efficient language learning environment that fosters pupil development and achievement.

The main goal is to enhance student's language ability and knowledge in four interrelated domains: social interaction; access to information; presentation; and appreciation of literature and culture, and language.

Social Interaction – Our goal is that our English learners will be able to conduct conversations and informal electronic and written communication with other speakers of English.

Access to information – We teach students how to search, find and make use of information. Access to information may be achieved through different resources: Spoken medium, written medium, or a combined medium like Computers and television.
Presentation – English teachers at Tichon Hadash focus on the ability of the pupils to present information and ideas in speech and in writing in an organized fashion.

Appreciation of literature, culture and language: The focus is not only to develop appreciation of literature and culture, but also to enhance pupils' language development.

As per the requirement of the Ministry of education, Literature is taught in all the classes using the most updated and innovative techniques for teaching literature. The literature program is based on the Ministry's policy to help students learn and apply higher order thinking. This approach facilitates students' ability to interpret and analyze pieces of literature by integrating higher-order thinking skills. This raises students' awareness of the interrelationship between language, literature and culture. This also provides opportunities for students to apply higher-order thinking skills in other domains as well as to their own lives.

Through their English learning we provide our students an opportunity to become aware of the nature of this language and of the differences between languages in general. This enables the students to develop their language use as well as gain further insight into the nature of their mother tongue.
Our teaching methods at Ticon Hadas put the student in the center. They include a combination of face-to-face teaching and computer-assisted language teaching achieved through a virtual learning environment.

We use a range of course books and materials and also a variety of audiovisual aids. Along with formal exercises, we also promote communication among the learners and the teacher. The aim of our English lessons is to encourage the students to use the structures and vocabulary they have leant and to improve their language skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening.
Tichon Hadash has one of the highest success rates on the English Bagrut in the country.
